"California's Proposition 209 is a 1996 ballot initiative that amended the state constitution to prohibit public institutions from considering race, sex, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting."

I'm agreeing that maybe 1996 is the start of this "color blind" form of racial suppression. I'm disagreeing that means that white racial consciousness was sleeping. I was raised in North Carolina and can assure you that overt racism (and anti-Semitism) was alive and well throughout the 80s and 90s.

Also I find being called an ally in this struggle kind of weird. I'm racially Jewish and don't consider myself less at risk of fascism then you are.
