Dominance hierarchies are not more prevalent or more stable in animals either.

"So that the aristocrats can run free" - except that doesn't really happen either except briefly for a handful at the top.

I think an alternative explanation is that conservatives just like being constrained - both for themselves and others. That's a defendable position given that science threatens to eventually make humans unrecognizable or obsolete.

But another explanation is that conservatives just don't want to pay taxes. That's more consistent as the conservative goal of destroying central government isn't going to constrain anything - just the opposite.
