I want to stress the "organized" in organized religion. For instance in the US Catholic or evangelical churches are holding beliefs that are coordinated at a level higher than individual churches and these beliefs are anti-intellectual.

I get that here and there intellectuals like you and your wife can participate in a church. I agree that what the more organized churches are doing is a perversion of the intellectual form of the religion.

I disagree (if you are even saying this) that the more intellectual form of these religions would ever be as pervasive or powerful as the anti-intellectual form. In order to gain popularity and power the intellectual form is the first sacrifice.

If you tour the great cathedrals of Europe, you are immediately struck by how anti-intellectual they are. Their purpose was certainly not helping "very damaged people to grow up emotionally and spiritually."
