\* In February 2018, a coalition of Stanford student organizations—including the Black Student Union, Movimiento Estudiantil de Chicano Aztlan, and the Stanford Democrats—published an open letter demanding that the university administration rescind a speaking invitation extended to Charles Murray. Murray was scheduled to speak at Hoover as part of the "Cardinal Conversations" series, an initiative designed to foster debate on controversial policy issues. The student coalition characterized Murray's research on genetic differences in intelligence as "oppressive, racist and meritless pseudo-science" that served as a "foundation for white supremacy". They argued that hosting Murray during Black History Month was an insult to students of color and undermined Stanford’s commitment to academic integrity.

\* the Stanford Faculty Senate voted to formally condemn Scott Atlas, a Hoover fellow and pandemic advisor to President Donald Trump, for public statements that medical faculty characterized as "potentially lethal junk science".
