### Side effects of conquering the earth

The environmental problems we face, though desperately serious, are only one part of the crisis.

What the green and orange lines above lead to is much more than the end of a shared purpose of numerical domination of the planet. They also are harbingers for the end of truth as we understand it.

In the past any truth expressed had the backing of the shared human goal of numerical domination. For instance a culture that disagreed with the truth “Murder is wrong.” was less likely to participate in populating the earth. Such a culture might be around briefly but soon would disappear in the sea of humanity produced by those with beliefs that were more conducive to population growth.

Scientific beliefs shared this backing because science was instrumental in reaching over 7 billion simultaneous humans. Blaming post modern philosophy for the degradation of shared culture is silly — its only describing what happens when humanity lacks a common goal forcing function.

The conquest of the earth also helped religions gained legitimacy. Any religion that didn’t help multiply was eventually outnumbered and forgotten. Two religions that equally helped promote population, say Catholic and Protestant, were forced, literally, to battle it out.

There seems currently to be a world wide rejection of the U.N. high estimate pictured above in red. So restoring the historical driver for truth would require changes and those changes can’t happen without more people agreeing in the first place.

There might be any number of factors behind the rejection of traditional fertility rates. Certainly falling infant and child mortality plays a role in planning but one often overlooked factor is that societies just don’t need as much manual labor.

The rise of non-routine cognitive to well over 50% of the work force is a postmodern forcing function of its own.

* Raising a child to get a non-routine cognitive job takes much longer than a child raised on a farm who can work from an early age.
* Every non-routine cognitive job is a post modern battle to prove the value of the frequently more abstract goods being delivered.

Simply making a profit is not enough as the banking, tech, education and energy sectors have shown. Even more basic needs like health care, infrastructure, defense and food are not exempt from a continual marketing campaign to prove their worth.

An economy attempting to increase the population of its country can only afford so much bullshit. A workforce free of that constraint can rev its engine in neutral gear.

That doesn’t mean returning to a population increasing / manual labor economy is the answer but it does mean the world has to take a much greater effort in preserving shared reality — *or not*.
