### The Democratic Party’s Best Strategy is to Stop Lying

President Trump thrives in a post truth environment — don’t hand him that.

The White House now has a page on Covid with Trump standing between the words Lab and Leak. It is truly disgusting so it will not be included in this blog to avoid triggering anyone.

However, when people associated with the Democratic Party simplify the complex for political reasons, they play right into the hands of Donald Prince of Lies Trump. Here, not in any order, are the biggest simplifications / lies the Democratic Party should stop telling to avoid full on fascism.

#### There is such a thing as an “independent” federal reserve.

The federal reserve plays politics and it is usually in favor of the wealthy as explained [here](https://medium.com/@disrael/i-lost-my-hat-and-sunglasses-why-the-rich-should-call-off-jerome-powell-d00ce4365c16) (and that blog doesn’t even go into quantitative easing).

#### Legal immigration is always good.

H1B visas are a policy choice. In his first term Trump was vaguely against H1Bs and in his second term he is vaguely for them. H1B policy should be something the Democratic Party owns with honesty about what actually benefits average Americans.

#### Illegal immigration is always bad.

There needs to be a bright line between US citizens and non US citizens but we don’t have to enforce that line at our border or by deportation. The Democratic Party should focus more on benefits for US citizens and explaining that non US citizens will not be getting these benefits.

#### Taking money from billionaires is okay.

Third Way is fascist. You can’t be funded by the devil and do the right thing.

#### The American constitution is sufficient.

So much hand wringing about whether or not the US is in a constitutional crisis. The United States has always been in a constitutional crisis. It was a crisis when the supreme court mandated George W. Bush be president. It was a crisis when they almost completely [killed campaign contribution limits](https://harvardlawreview.org/blog/2019/12/the-supreme-court-is-killing-contribution-limits-softly-a-few-years-from-now-they-likely-will-be-dead/). Slavery was a constitutional crisis. Women’s suffrage was a constitutional crisis. These days poverty is a constitutional crisis.

#### Meritocracy and gerontocracy can be salvaged.

Some reward based on merit or years of service is alright, but a ruling class based on merit or years of service is not. It’s also not okay to so imagine that humans can determine merit that your rewards and punishments become insane — like oligarchy and the largest per capita imprisoned population in the world behind only El Salvador, which only has a population of 6.3 million, Rwanda, 14 million, Cuba, 11 million, and Turkmenistan, 7.4 million.

*The Democratic Party maintains a steady drumbeat of misinformation that meritocracy and gerontocracy can be patched up.*

On gerontocracy the Democratic Party’s voters predilection for the very old and then elected members outright hazing of junior members by preventing them from having any power is legendary. There has to be clear messaging that none of that works in a fight against fascism.

On meritocracy the intransigence is seen in the ‘[Abundance Agenda](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTC5jKpYYNU)’. The problem isn’t that college has become empty virtue signalling — it’s that the empty virtue signalling is not equally available to all. The problem isn’t that meritocracy is gentrifying the country beyond the means of ordinary citizens — it’s that there’s not enough housing and we should build more.

Oh and getting clean energy is just a matter of properly incentivizing corporations to build clean energy. Never mind that this will lean into a meritocracy hell bent on producing more CEOs / bankers who turn around and threaten democracy. You can’t defeat fascism by feeding a machine that produces fascists.

Chinese Confucian meritocracy was in place long before “free” markets. Leadership by “merit” hinders modernization and development equally whether it is CEOs / bankers or Confucian scholars. In the end the “merit” ends up being rewarded whether it benefits the greater population or not. You can have your capitalism — you just can’t pay large sums to the people running it.

Where capitalism run a certain way becomes intertwined with meritocracy is when you reward “innovative” companies without limit. Just as meritocracy must be limited when it comes to individual compensation, there must also be limits on collective compensation. The longer a company has existed the higher the chance must be that it is broken up for being monopolistic.

However, by themselves antitrust laws are ultimately the sort of meritocracy patching that isn’t enough. The Democratic Party must admit that real change, like some of [this](https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/transformation/five-ways-to-curb-power-of-corporations/) article’s proposals, is required.
