The supposed pragmatism by which American voters have been triangulated towards overly expensive education and health care, does not have any obvious justification other than popularity with the 1% or maybe even the 0.01%.

Welfare chauvinism, not wanting immigrants to get full citizen benefits, probably is having a difficult to alter voter reality. That’s evident as we see this attitude in both America and Europe.

Americans need to take a harder line with politicians, especially “pragmatic” ones, and differentiate between policies coming from voters and ones coming from large donors or the politicians themselves.
